Holiday Lesson Plans with Gingerbread

Friends~We have been working hard on our holiday lessons with Gingerbread. Not only have we read Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett we worked on symmetry in math with gingerbread.  My kiddos loved making these sweet little guys!  We first discussed the line of symmetry and folded our gingerbread men in half.  I had the students decorate one side of the gingerbread man.  We then sat down to watch Jan Brett read Gingerbread Baby.

While they watched, I walked around and hid the gingerbread in the classroom.  Once the video book was completed, I told the class it was their job to go find the gingerbread and complete the other half. Keeping symmetry in mind.

They did a great job designing the other half of the gingerbread.  When we switched back it was fun to watch their faces when they saw how both sides now matched.

We also have been playing I Spy with gingerbread men.  I have them posted all over the classroom.  They love hunting for the gingerbread and then identifying the number form.
It is great practice!

Olive the Other Reindeer Activities and Freebie

Friends~I love sharing some of my favorite holiday songs and books with my class.  One of my favorite carols is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer so I guess that is why I get such a kick out of the book: Olive the Other Reindeer by J. Otto Seibold.
Olive the Other Reindeer Activities and Freebie The Schroeder Page
I share this book every year after we have studied reindeer and have written our reindeer reports.  It is such a fun tale that always inspires them to write their own reindeer stories.
I just put a fun little book study together for my students.  You can check it out below.

Winter Writing Freebie

Friends~I was working on my plans today and I wanted to add some wintry fun to my writing center.  I just created this fun Spin a Story center for my kiddos.  I love the way it turned out.  I am thinking I will print off the mats and laminate for them to grab and go. Another option would be to create a bulletin board with arrows that the students could move choose their characters, setting, problem and solution.

Either way you go, I think this is totally going to be a favorite this week in room 331!

You can check out my plans here and download a free copy.  Be sure to click the images

Reindeer Lessons and a Freebie!

Reindeer Lessons and a Freebie
Friends~I love starting the month of December off with my nonfiction unit on reindeer.  It is the perfect way to calm those "it's almost Christmas jitters!"  My students are always entranced with the idea of regular reindeer vs Santa's reindeer.
I always start it off with reading the mini chapter book Remarkable Reindeer.  Our school librarian introduced me to this book a few years ago.  It is an awesome book for teaching text features in small manageable chapters.  Check out my kiddos below working in buddies answering comprehension questions from the text and it's features.
Reindeer Lessons and a Freebie! The Schroeder Page

We really focused on how text features like fast facts and captions can give you more information.  It was interesting that even after talking about how important it was to read all of the text, students were still telling me that they could not find the answers.  I pointed out that some of the answers may be in the captains or fast facts.  After a 2nd read they always came up with the answers easily.  If you want to check out my reindeer file click HERE:)

We also watched this wonderful video from Zoo America.  This video gives the best reindeer fact ever!  Reindeer have a tendon in near their hooves that make them click when the walk!  Hello!  Up on the roof top, click, click, click!
We ended the week with a fun QR Code review my teammate put together.  Our classes buddied up and used our school ipads to scan the codes and check their answers to some review reindeer questions.  It is always so fun to watch their engagement increase when you add technology to a lesson.

You all know how I love to stretch a theme across the curriculum right?  Well, I put this fun freebie together for this month.  Measuring with reindeer noses.  You will need red and black pom poms in a variety of sizes.
Measurement is our next unit in math so, I will be using this as a pre assessment of skills from first grade.

One other bit of excitement!  If you are a hedgehog lover or you are just looking for a fun story for your kiddos at your listening center this month, check out Henry the Hedgehog's newest book!
Included is a video reading and also a QR code for the listening center.
Simply print off the pages and bind this book for your classroom!
I promise your kiddos will LOVE the surprise ending!

Primary Thinking Skills with The Schroeder Page

Friends~Do you want to get your kiddos thinking? This week in room 331, we were THINKING with the P.E.T.S program from Pieces of Learning.  I am just getting to know this program but I am loving what I see!  My kiddos are totally getting the fact that we all think differently.  We LOVE Dudley the Detective and his no nonsense approach to thinking.
He gathers facts and doesn't jump to conclusions.
We even made a song about him.
Check out their cute badges.

We loved meeting Isabel the Inventor.
(She is totally my kind of thinker:)
Check out our BRAINFOCALS!
We made these so that we could practice looking at problems differently.

You can download a sample lesson here!
Speaking of problems.  I totally threw my kiddos a curve ball during our problem solving in math.
I gave them ALL the answers!
You should have seen their faces:)
I told them I wanted them to prove how those answers were correct.
Check out this little guy proving with pictures and words!

My kiddos even met our newest pet!  Stella the Hedgehog.  She is the sweetest thing!  After meeting her they begged to hear Henry's book again.  I can't tell you how cool it is to hear them chant Spike, Spine, Poke!
We also went on an amazing field trip to Frank Liske park.  It is a local metro park in our area.  The instructors taught a lesson for each of our CCSS science goals.
Check out force and motion below!

I did crack up a bit when one of my students told me that when we walked on the trails in the park it was like walking in Crystal Pond Woods like Dudley!

I also ran across this ebook that I am looking into.
I love that is focuses on classroom management and how that is the key to managing successful learners!

Technology in the Classroom with Ebooks and QR Codes!

Technology in the Classroom with Ebooks
and QR Codes!
Friends~Do you want to learn how to easily bring technology into your classroom? Ebooks and QR Codes are the ticket.  My kiddos are going crazy over them!

I also have to share that I sold my first Ebook today!  Yep!  I wrote one and as of 4:00 p.m. I have sold 3 copies:)  I feel pretty good about that!  Fingers crossed that it really takes off!
Technology in the Classroom with Ebooks and QR Codes, The Schroeder Page

Here is what my book lookes like in its different forms:
This is the printed version.  I print it by changing the setting on my computer to print 2 pages to a sheet of paper. My setting says multiple.
(Totally saves on ink and paper.)

I then cut out the pages.
I laminate only the front and back cover and bind using a book binding machine.
I added a QR code so my students can scan it to watch a video recording of the book.  There is some neat animation in the book thanks to Power Point!

I also use the Ebook on my classroom computers. I keep a folder on my desktop with all my Ebooks in it.  My students can open a book and use the arrow keys to flip through the pages as they read.
Some ebooks I have read into a video formate and linked to an image in the book.  Like in Henry's below!

Another option is GoodNotes on the ipad.
Technology in the Classroom with Ebooks and QR Codes, The Schroeder Page
The cost is $5.99 but it is totally worth it.  You can upload PDFs and create handnotes and diagrams.  You can mark up the PDFs with a built in pen or hightlighter.  I love to use this app during guided reading so that I can share my novel studies and not have to print off copies for everyone.
I also keep ebooks for my students in my Kindle App. As you can tell, my kiddos love Roscoe Riley and Hedgehogs!
This is my personal ipad so you can see my books too.
Duck Dynasty and Writing a Children's Book for Dummys! HA!
My kiddos have a seperate iPad and I only place children's books in their Kindle app!

Here is my QR Code Listening Center!
My kiddos love it!

I hope this post gives you some ideas on how to bring more technology into your classroom!
If you download, I would love to hear how you use technology in your classroom!
