Fall Science: Bat and Human Compare!
Friends~My student teacher and I are beginning to plan our lessons for next week and I can hardly contain my excitement! October is here and we are going to be learning all about BATS!!!! I love those furry guys and I also love how engaged my students are when we study them.
One of my favorite activities is to compare a bat wing to a human hand. Bat wings are made up of 5 fingers just like a humans. The difference is that the bat wing has a membrane stretched over the fingers to make the wing.

I start by passing out plastic sandwich bags without zip locks. I instruct the students to place one baggie on their hand and leave one hand alone.
I instruct the class to look closely at their bat wing and their hand. We also move our hands and wings to help with our investigation. We have a group discussion about how they are the same and how they differ.
Using an XRay of a human hand helps this activity
come to life!
Once they have compared and contrasted their bat wing and hand they fill out the sheet below.
Even a simple venn diagram would work.
