Going Batty!

Fall is my very favorite season and I love teaching all of the creepy crawly lessons in the month of October.  It was a bit cooler today in North Carolina so it really put me in the mood for BATS!  They are totally amazing creatures and there are so many fantastic fiction and nonfiction books to add to your classroom library.

This year we are planning to teach echolocation in our sound unit with bats.  I found a great activity with a pie tin and two toilet paper rolls.  You tape the rolls down near each other on a table with the pie tin at the end.  Then you ask groups of 2 students begin by allowing one student to whisper a message to the other.  The message will bounce off the pie tin and the other student will be able to hear it.  You can read more about this at Kinder Nature.  I can't wait to try this with my class.

I also have a fun bat unit for sale at The Schroeder Page or at my Teacher's Notebook Store. Below you will find a few previews of it.  It is filled with fun center activities and lots of science fun.

I am getting started on a Bat SMARTboard lesson too!  Be on the Look OUT!

  2. Your post title reminded me of a cute Ready Freddy Chapter book for 2nd graders... called Going Batty. It's a cute book to read with a bit of science information in it also. I created a comprehension page I'd love to share with you in case you read it ;)

  4. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is great blog. A fantastic read. I'll certainly be back.
